The Power of Literacy
Literacy is often associated with the ability to read, write, understand, and use information. However, the term has come to take on broader meaning, standing for a range of knowledge, skills and abilities relating to reading, mathematics, science and more. It is about making sense and engaging.
Teachers as Agents of Power:
promote critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration in all content areas along with technology skills and global competencies.
promote the enjoyment of reading texts for the pleasure they bring, the ideas they convey, the information they impart, the wisdom they offer, and the possibilities they uncover.
promote 21st century skills ensure intellectually challenging tasks and learning activities.
promote access to complex text and integration across content areas through reading, writing and discourse.
promote motivation and engagement by incorporating motivational factors, such as interest, relevance, identity, and self-efficacy.
promote cross-linguistic transfer of skills that result in proficient English Language Development and Biliteracy.
promote respect and the value of cultural and linguistic diversity, fostering pride and a positive self-image for all students in order to create optimal learning environment.
Today we come together as a community of educators to revitalize and re-affirm our commitment to being agents of the power of literacy!
