Fr. Ray Kelly is a 64-year-old parish priest from Ireland who loves to sing. Now known as «The Hallelujah Priest,» he became an internet star overnight in 2014: an amateur video surfaced of him singing a personalized version of Leonard Cohen’s iconic song “Hallelujah” to a young couple he was marrying. It was posted on Youtube and has since reached over 63 million views. https://youtube.com/watch?v=XYKwqj5QViQ&t=56s
He went on to record a couple of CDs. This spring he appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent” and thoroughly wowed Simon Cowell, who declared Fr. Ray's rendition of REM's «Everybody Hurts» to be one of his «favorite ever auditions.» https://youtube.com/watch?v=Mx8yD3-HWTg
Thanks to a couple of ladies here in San Antonio who wanted to see him sing, he offered to come give a concert in San Antonio, if he could sing at the Basilica! The priest at a Toledo, OH, church where Fr. Kelly sang last year told us that Fr. Kelly put on a «superb concert and that it was ten times better than seeing him on the internet.»
Fr. Kelly will give a concert here at the Basilica on Saturday, Sept. 29 to benefit the restoration project. Premium seating tickets include admission to a post-concert wine-and-cheese reception with Fr. Ray, who will sign CDs. All proceeds benefit the Basilica restoration project!
