Corporeal Narratives is an evening of intimate dance works featuring, Dr. Leonard Cruz. Along with Cruz, local Alamo Colleges faculty will also present work; Amber Ortega-Perez of Palo Alto College and Adel Hernandez of San Antonio College. Dr. Cruz will debut an new improvisational work set on Ortega-Perez and Hernandez. Local dancer-activist, Fabiola Torralba will also present work.
ABOUT DR. CRUZ
Dr. Leonard Cruz (PhD in Urban Education with a focus on the Performing and Creative Arts) was born in the Philippines and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He started dancing at the age of four learning Filipino and Hawaiian Folk Dances. In 1983, he was a Finalist in Young Arts Miami, Florida and was later named Presidential Scholar. He received his Bachelor of Arts and Masters of Arts in Dance from U.C.L.A., and later obtained his Master of Fine Arts in Performance/Choreography in 2009. In 2013 he successfully defended his PhD dissertation on, “Laban Movement Analysis as a Methodology for Promoting Creativity and the Arts Across the Curriculum,” from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Cruz has performed internationally with renowned choreographers: Robert Wilson, Kei Takei's Moving Earth, Shapiro and Smith Dance, Sally Silvers, and five years with Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane and Co. In 1993 he received his first engagement in Germany, where he was a guest with Pina Bausch in Wuppertal and a member of the Folkwang Tanz Studio. From 1994-2001 he was a soloist at the Bremer Stadttheater under the Directorship of Susanne Linke and Urs Dietrich. For the past 20 years he has also directed his own dance company, “Leonard Cruz Tanztheater” and has toured throughout Asia, Europe and the USA. Dr. Cruz has taught at St. Mary’s College of Maryland from 2012-2016, Duke University, MIT, the University of Wisconsin, and Webster University. He has been a Bessie Schoenberg Choreographer at The Yard in Martha’s Vineyard and was nominated for the international Kurt Jooss Prize in Choreography. Leonard specializes in Civic and Community Engagement through all of the art forms and believes in lifelong performing and learning. He presently is the Health Expert at the Folkwang University in Essen, Germany.
