Jump-Start Performance Co. is proud to present
“Works in Progress” by artist Carly Garza
for the annual On & Off Fredericksburg Road Studio Tour.
Carly Garza is an interdisciplinary artist and musician living in San Antonio whose work investigates mark making, self-image, and personal habits and patterns. She works in many media, but currently focuses on drawing and fiber art. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, WA.
Carly’s artist statement for this exhibit is as follows: “I draw. I use ink. I stitch. I make repetitive marks. Mark, mark, mark, mark. I, I, I, I. I think my marks echo patterns in nature. The fur of a small mammal. The hair on the human body. Lines, lines, lines, covering the whole. I create marks or stitches or symbols and repeat and repeat and repeat them. The human figure is always present — as a tool, as a home, as a witness, as an avatar, as a source of anguish. I think, with practice, the movements of the body can also control the movements of the mind. In my work I ask, how can repetition of a motion change a mental state? More to the point: what does it mean to inhabit the ephemeral human body?”
The exhibit is free and open to the public and takes place Saturday, February 16 from 11am to 6pm and Sunday, February 17 from 12pm to 5pm, at Jump-Start Theater.
Musical performances by the artist will happen on both days starting at 2pm. For more information call 210-227-JUMP (5867).
